Facts about Acne – You are not Alone
July 19, 2008- Acne will affect around 50 million individuals at some time in their lives in the US and Canada. 80% of teenagers will face some sort of acne, whether a small pimple or severe acne, at some point in their lives.
- Acne will affect teenage boys and girls equally, but teenage boys are more prone to severe acne.
- Acne tends to start between the ages of 10 and 13 and will usually last 5-10 years. The technical term for adolescent is acne vulgaris.
- Adults have fewer blackheads and whiteheads, and for women tends to be on the lower part of the face. Acne for adult females is linked to their menstrual cycles, as well as hormonal activity due to pregnancy, and the starting and stopping of birth control pills.
- By their mid-teens, more than 40% of adolescents will have acne severe enough to require professional medical attention, whether through a physician or dermatologist.
